Rohini Singh and Rajanee: A meeting of minds
Rajanee founder Chrystel Fasilleau knew she was onto a winner when she chanced upon designer Rohini Singh.
It was the summer of 2009, and Chrystel was in the northern Indian city of Jaipur on her first business trip for Rajanee. Driving her round the city in his rickshaw taxi was Raeiis, a friend of 17 years and a staunch supporter of the Rajanee vision.
‘I was chatting to Raeiis about my ideas for Rajanee, and he asked me whether I’d thought about importing fabrics from India, alongside the jewellery, homeware and other products I’d already tracked down,’ Chrystel explains. She thought Raeiis was onto something – so she jumped in his rickshaw and he took her to see several different textile merchants in the city. Nothing, however, stood out.
For Chrystel, the key was sourcing a supplier who could provide something a little different. ‘I said to Raeiis, look, my dream is really to find an Indian designer who’s lived in Europe and who can bring those two cultures together in their work.’
With that, Raeiis immediately thought of friend and customer Rohini Singh. Rohini had worked in Europe for the likes of Versace and Harvey Nichols, but had returned to her home country to reconnect with the warmth, colour and rich traditions of Indian textiles, and set up her own designer label.
‘Rohini is such a lovely lady, and we got on straight away,’ says Chrystel. ‘She knew exactly what I was looking for – and she knew exactly what sort of designs she wanted to see with Rajanee, too.’
The resulting clothing range, designed exclusively for Rajanee, encompasses the worlds of European fashion and Indian tradition perfectly. Using light, airy cottons and sophisticated detailing, Rohini’s collection is represents the spirit of Rajanee – unique, desirable, and made with love.
